A Study on Use of Substance by Junior College Students


Abstract
This study was attempted to find out general characteristics of user, the attitude of using drug and the status of using drugs during the latest one week. And this study was attempted to compare the relation between the general characteristics and the status of using drugs. The data was gathered in using questionnaire from June 1, 1989 to June 15, 1989.
The subjects of study were students of 1 junior college in Inchon and the sample was 335 students.
The results were as follows;
1. The major characteristics of subjects.
89.3 % of the total sex was male. With regard to the age, 17-19 ages was 57.0 %. With regard to the grade, 48.1 % of grade was 2nd grade. Medical insurance was 71.3 %. 91.9 of total was middle grade to economic level. With regard to the health studus, 76.1 % was good level.
2. Characteristics on using drug.
With regard to the using time, 49.3 % was on unendurable time.
With regard to the channel of purchasing drug, 66.9 % was from drugstore.
With regard to the information channel, 47.8 % got information from the advertisements of TV, Newspaper, journal.
With regard to the making decision upon using drug, 55.8 % was from the pharmacist. With regard to the obeying the effective dose, obeying accurately was 33.7 %. , With regard to the experiencing side effect, experienced was 29.3 %. Using antibiotics by doctor¢¥s prescription was only 23.9 % of total.
The mean of the kinds of the drug used frequently by parents was 0.96, and 46.0 % was using only one kinds.
3. Kinds of drugs was 18; topical agents, nutriants, analeptics, antiemetics, medicines for cold, antacid, analgesics, & antipyretics antihistamines, antibiotics, antiphlogistics, cathartics, diuretics, antidiarrheal agents; antianxiety drug, psychotomimetics, digestants, sedatives & hypnotics, drug for a decrease of appetitute.
The highest mean of frequency of using drug was 2.19 on topical agents.
The mean of frequency the other drug except topical agents was below 1.0.
With the regard to the kinds of using drug during the latest one week, 1 kinds was 35.2 % and the students who having not using drug was 31.3 %.
4. Correlation between general characteristics and using of the drug.
There was significant correlation between the kinds of drug used frequently by parents and the kinds used by students. (X2=22.16, p < 0.01, pearson correlation: r = 0.2256,
p=0.0000)
5. The correlation between the kinds of drug used during the latest 1 week and sex, grade, kinds of medical insurance was not significant. But the correlation with the health status was significant. (X2=16.43, p < 0.05).
Students who was the more good health status had the fewer kinds of using drug.
From the above results, it was suggested that the government¢¥s regulation of excessive drug advertisements, education, public information, counselling with students were needed.
